Swallows Nest Barn Wedding Photography

On a lovely June 1st Saturday, I had the pleasure of capturing James and Giles' wedding blessing at Swallows Nest Barn in Sherbourne, near Warwick. I'd always wanted to shoot a wedding here, but my schedule never lined up before. Now I see why it's such a hit with couples!

The venue is brilliant - everything's close by, it's private, and there are loads of great spots for photos. It's a photographer's dream, really.

I'd been emailing with Giles and James beforehand. They seemed laid-back but organised - just my cup of tea. I like knowing what's happening when, so I can focus on getting great shots.

I got to Swallows Nest at noon, meeting Giles and James in casual clothes as they set up with Steph their friendly wedding coordinator. I'd arrived a bit early on purpose to scout photo locations. I'd done my homework online and checked Google Earth, so I had a good idea of the lay of the land.

After my little explore, I caught up with the couple for some relaxed pre-wedding shots. We used the prep room and the olive tree in the courtyard. It was so chilled out compared to the usual rush of church or registry office weddings. This felt like a dream!

We took a few more photos in the ceremony barn and I snapped some ring shots. Soon, guests started arriving. There was a buzz in the air as Giles and James greeted everyone - perfect for candid photos.

The blessing was held by their friend Carrie, who'd done their official London ceremony. It was like an episode of "This is Your Life"! We heard all about how they met, down to what they wore that day. It was a lovely insight into their story. There was even a ring-warming ritual, where guests passed the rings around to transfer their warmth and good wishes.

After the blessing, we did a confetti shot and then the drinks reception. I took some more photos, then we nipped off for portraits by Sherbourne brook and in the wildflower meadow. We got back just as the barn had been transformed for the meal, all candlelit and fancy.

I had a break during the meal, then it was speech time. They were all emotional, but Giles' speech really tugged at the heartstrings. Even for someone who hears loads of speeches, it was moving - there were tears all round!

After the reception, I got more shots of guests in the courtyard. Then we headed out to the back field for some golden hour photos. It was great that Giles and James were up for this - some couples aren't too fussed. We trekked up the small hill in the field and got some cracking shots in the low sun.

May/June is my favourite time of year - long days, bright greenery, and this day was spot on. Not too hot, no wind - perfect! We headed back to the barn for the first dance, and I finished up with a sparkler line up!
